The NBMC @ the Smart Museum
FEAST: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art
The Smart Museum of Art
University of Chicago, Chicago, IL
February 16 – June 10, 2012
*Opening: February 15, 2012*
The NBMC (Hiroko Kikuchi, Jeremy Liu, and Andi Sutton) will be participating in the upcoming exhibition Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art at The Smart Museum at the University of Chicago. Click here for details.
The show surveys artists’ use of food and the meal in their practices, showcasing artists and collectives who have transformed the shared meal into a compelling artistic medium. The exhibition examines the history of the artist-orchestrated meal, assessing its roots in early-twentieth century European avant-garde art, its development over the past decades within Western art, and its current global ubiquity. This, a traveling show, will also visit the following venues:
Blaffer Art Museum, University of Houston, Texas
Fall 2013
SITE Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico
Winter 2014
For our contribution to the exhibition, the NBMC will include ephemera from our past projects such as Bitter Melon [A]side/Bitter Melon [In]side and our 2011 artist book Better Living through Bitter Melon: A Manual. We also invited the Smart Museum’s exhibition staff to perform a project recipe in advance of the exhibition. Read more about the participatory piece, one that sets the stage for a part of our installation, here.
